Computer Literacy Instruction Within ABE

Computer literacy instruction, within Adult Basic Education programs, is designed to introduce students to the computer and its most basic applications.  The goal is to provide learners with a working knowledge of a computer’s capabilities. Upon completing an ABE computer literacy program(s), students wishing to acquire additional skills are encouraged to enroll in local community, vocational, or college courses for more detailed /
advanced training.

Prior to offering an ABE-sponsored computer literacy program, it is extremely important to develop a cooperative / working relationship with the local community education, vocational, or college education programs.  The goal of ABE-sponsored computer literacy programs is to provide “basic” computer experience and knowledge and IS NOT meant to supplant computer literacy programs already being offered through the community education, vocational, or college programs.  However, ABE-sponsored computer literacy programs ARE meant to provide general information that introduces users, with little or no computer experience, to the basic features and functions of a computer and to common types of application software.
