Pre-Service Training
ABE
Pre-Service Training Requirements (to be completed prior to instruction)
Professional development
activities begin even before a new instructor starts a new teaching
assignment. The WV ABE pre-service program is designed for instructors
who have not previously taught in the WV ABE program; who are returning
after an absence of three or more years; or who are adding a specialty.
Experienced WV ABE instructors called Peer Trainers deliver the
pre-service program. The 8 to 14 hours of pre-service
training must be completed prior to beginning instruction.
The training session
includes topics such as:
• Overview of state and local WV ABE and literacy programs
• Student enrollment and attendance
• Program reporting and evaluation
• Adult learner needs
• Student intake and goal setting
• Student assessment and placement
• Planning for instruction
• Program marketing
• Student recruitment and retention
• GED testing process
• Special WV ABE programs
• Resources
The pre-service training is customized to meet the specific needs of
instructors in the following program areas:
• General ABE Instructors
• Returning WV ABE Instructors (out of the program for 3 years or more)
• English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructors
• Institutional Education Instructors
• Family Literacy/Even Start Instructors
• ABE in the Community College Setting
• Distance Education/Cyber-teaching
• SPOKES Instructors
• Substitute Instructors
• Hit the Ground Running (HTGR) Only Instructors
• Computer Literacy Only Instructors
• Workplace Education Only Instructors
The program area in which the instructor will be teaching determines the
length of the pre-service training and the topics covered. The following
charts indicate the training requirements for each program area.
