What is available in West Virginia?
Within West Virginia, the Adult Distance Education Program, Advantage GED, offers free GED study through online programming. To participate in the online course, you must know how to navigate the Internet and must be able to work at home, the public library, an adult learning center, the home of a friend or relative, or anywhere there is Internet access** available to you.

How much does it cost?
The online study program is provided through state and federal funding and is offered at no cost to you, the student. (When you go to take the GED test, there will be a test fee of $50 at West Virginia testing centers.)

Can I study at home AND attend class?
Yes, I would encourage you to do so. The more support and information you can receive, the faster you will progress.

What if I need help?
You will contact the teacher that you are assigned during your orientation for additional help. If you have questions about who to contact, call the Adult Education Hotline at 1-800-642-2670. Supplemental material, interim testing, and follow-up assessment are also components of the program provided at no cost to you by the adult learning center in your area.

What do I have to do to participate?
The first step is to enroll. You may register for enrollment by filling out and submitting the online registration form.

You will be referred to a local Adult Basic Education (ABE) classroom for assessment testing and an orientation to the program.

Once the enrollment process has been completed, you will receive a student handbook that will enable you to access and use the online study program. You will also be assigned a Cyber-teacher who will work closely with you to set you up a course of study. You must commit to working on the online program for a minimum of 10 hours per week/40 hours per month in order to keep your active status in the program.

Interim-testing is mandatory for continuance in this program. Your Cyber-teacher will refer you to your local adult learning center when it is time for your interim-testing. (See the Student Commitment Contract for more detailed information on program participation requirements.)

At the conclusion of the online study course, you will be scheduled an appointment to go into the classroom to take your final assessment test. Your Cyber-teacher will let you know when you should go for follow-up assessment.

When you are ready to take the GED test, you will be referred to your local GED testing center. (The cost of the GED test is approximately $50 in West Virginia.)
