This program provides a flexible learning opportunity for West Virginia adults who need to prepare for the General Educational Development (GED) test. And it's free! You can now study any time of the day from any computer with Internet access.** Simply follow the steps below to get started.


 

Step 1 - System Checklist

**Complete the PWLN System Checklist to ensure that your computer meets the system & configuration requirements that are necessary for you to be able to download and run the online study program.

 

Step 2 — Registration

  • Complete the online registration form;OR
  • Call the Adult Education Hotline at 1-800-642-2670 if you need assistance or would like additional information.
 
Step 3 —Enrollment Process

After receiving your request for enrollment, the Distance Education office will e-mail your information to the nearest Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. (You may get contact information for your local ABE program by calling the Adult Education Hotline at 1-800-642-2670.)

The ABE program will contact you by either sending an appointment card or by calling you for an appointment for enrollment in the distance education program.

 
Step 4 — Orientation

You will go to the ABE program for your orientation in the program. This orientation includes:

  • Academic assessment
  • Goal-setting
  • Learning style(s) determination
  • Screening for special learning needs
  • Signing of the Release of Information Form
  • Signing of the Internet Use Policy
  • Signing of the Distance Education Student Commitment Contract
  • Receiving a student handbook that enables you to access and use the online study program

If your academic assessment results indicate that you would benefit from additional instruction prior to enrolling in the distance education course, your options will be explained.

 
Step 5 — Instructional Process

To take advantage of the online learning opportunity, you will need to have access to a computer (i.e. at home, local library, an ABE class in your community) that has Internet access. You must also make a commitment to spend at least ten (10) hours per week on your studies.

You will be assigned a Cyber-teacher who will set you up a plan of study. You must contact your Cyber-teacher via e-mail prior to beginning your study program to get your group name. Begin your online instruction within two (2) business days after completing enrollment.

As you study, the following services and support will be available:

  • assistance, tutoring, counseling, and encouragement by emailing your teacher;
  • monitoring of your instructional progress by your assigned teacher;
  • supplementary instructional materials (via online web sites) when necessary; and
  • referral to Adult Basic Education classes for additional instruction, if desired.

When you complete the instructional program, you will be referred to the adult learning center in your area to complete a follow-up test, which will assess your progress in the program. You may also be given the option of taking the Official Practice Test once you complete the survey.

 
Step 6 — Taking the GED Test

If you meet the scoring requirements on the Official Practice Test (OPT), you may be eligible for a “Free GED testing fee” voucher. (This is based upon availability of funds. Check with the teacher at the learning center where you take the OPT to see if funds are available.)
