Components of ABE

The purpose of Adult Basic Education is to:

  • assist adults to become literate and obtain knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency;

  • assist adults who are parents to obtain the functional skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children; and

  • assist adults in the completion of a secondary school education

 Target Populations Served Include:

  • Unemployed adults

  • High school dropouts

  • Institutionalized adults

  • Public assistance recipients

  • Displaced workers

  • Under-skilled workers

  • Individuals of limited English proficiency

  • Disabled adults

  • Residents of domestic violence and homeless shelters

  • Adults preparing for college entrance, for job obtainment and/or promotion, or for enrollment in further education or training.

Programs are offered through county boards of education, Regional Education Service Agencies (RESA'S), volunteer literacy programs, community-based organizations, and correctional education programs. The services are available at no cost to adult learners and are designed to meet the needs of each individual. Instruction is provided by certified adult education practitioners.

ABE Curriculum Areas:

  • Basic Skills Instruction in reading, writing, math, listening, and speaking

  • Thinking and Learning Skills Instruction in creative thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, learning, and reasoning

  • Work Foundations Instruction in organization and time management, wellness and safety, team building, technology, and multi-cultural awareness

  • Job Readiness Skills Instruction in goal-setting, career planning, personal work traits, employee rights and responsibilities, job search strategies, and unemployment survival

  • GED Test Preparation and preparation for other specialized examinations such as the ASVAB, LPN Entrance, ACT/SAT, Civil Service, and others

  • English as a Second Language Instruction in pre-literacy, reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, U.S. Citizenship, cultural literacy, test preparation or the TOEFL, and other college entrance examinations.

  • Life-Coping Skills Instruction in budgeting, nutrition, consumerism, parenting, and others

  • Computer Literacy Instruction in keyboarding, word processing, and other introductory skills

Specialized ABE Programs Include:

  • ABE/WV Works and higher expectations for public assistance recipients

  • Workplace Education for applicants and employees of new and existing businesses

  • Correctional Education for adults institutionalized in state and regional jails

  • Distance Education for home-based learners

  • Family Literacy for parents and their children

  • External Diploma Program (EDP) - a life skills assessment program for independent learners

  • Special Topics Classes for adults who want to obtain a specialized certificates of completion in a particular area
